I do't like it when people place their Bibles on their coffee tables or upright like in a bookstore.

Haven't these people read Matthew 6?
(PLEASE READ IT FOR YOURSELF BEFORE ANSWERING)

Most people who claim to be "Christian" have never really read their Bible, or if they did, they read only the parts that convienience them and their ideologies.

Having the Word of God as Christians believe it to be, is a constant reminder to abide by his laws. Early Christians would wear Scapulas or little scrolls of written word around their necks as a constant reminder to keep the word near their hearts. If we keep gold rings on our fingers isn't that a hypocracy of marriage? Does one really need a ring to be married or tell someone that they are married? No, but it is a constant reminder to keep your spouse in all the things you do with your hands.

I would read it but I'm too busy dusting mine off. I have one everyday bible, paperback which is for family, close friends- then there is the hoity toity bible, with leather backing and gilded pages, and that's for when the preacher visits - and then there's the old standby gideon, which i just gave to another asker, who said he had a smokin' need for it.
seriously, wasn't there a bible quote that said - don't be frettin' about the speck in their eye, 'til ya extract that honkin' huge stick that's in your own.

maybe they like the physical reminder that god is there and is with them

it is all relevant to the individual

there may be some who like to 'show it off'

but most christians like to keep the good book near for comfort and it is good to keep it handy just in case you need a little pick me up and need to read a verse

why not keep near the very one thing that binds all us christians together

Some like to have them handy, I guess. Mine all mean something to me, even if I do not believe they are the word of God. They all have memories. And mine are all over the house.

Not exactly sure what you're driving at here.

The chapter you cite has to do with the way in which you are supposed to give and pray and how you are supposed to pray.

What, basically, is you're point.

As long as they practise what they preach, that's important.
