Yes, it is hard to become as fluent in English as a native speaker - however, it is is relatively easy to become proficient in the language.

I have several Chinese friends (postgrads met through acting as a mentor for English language) and all of them became competent, in both spoken and written English, in quite a short time.

A good idea is to find a penpal, a proficient native speaker of English, and correspond on matters of interest to you both.

[But please do not use 'colloquial/slang' words like 'gonna' for 'going to', or get tempted into writing 'textspeak', such as 'b4' for 'before. The latter is fine for sending text messages, but not a good way to learn to write formal English!]

I would also recommend that you try to read English language newspapers. NOTE If you can not obtain British or American publications then try China Daily, which is written in English.

Via the Internet, there should be some English language radio stations to which you can listen, though I understand there are PRC restrictions on BBC and VOA transmissions.

From the foreign languages section of your university library, read books by classic English language authors - from Edgar Alan Poe to Charles Dickens. These will not only entertain you, but illustrate well structured prose. By the way, leave Shakespeare alone until you are really competent - some of the the language he used is too obscure even for many native speakers of English!

The way in which you composed your Question, suggests that you already have a good grasp of English, so all you need to do is build up on that foundation.

Anyway, good luck in your studies - you will never regret the effort you put into learning what has become the world's true 'lingua franca'.
