I have a Sony Cybershot P200 with 7.2 megapixels. I researched the topic extensively before I bought it, and I very warmly recommend it.

Why?

PROS

1. Battery life. Digital cameras devour batteries. You can buy a cheap, even a dazzlingly expensive camera, only to find that after an hour's use, the batteries are dead. Sony have concentrated a lot of effort of developing 'battery stamina technology'. You will find that the battery will last for hours and hours, even days, on a single charge.
2. Excellent optics. A top German lens combined with the huge amount of megapixels means you can blow a picture up without losing quality.
3. Movie Mode - You can shoot movies with sound at 30fps. This is at very high quality and will allow you to use movie-making software at a very high standard.
4. Excellent in low-light. You don't always need flash and you can obtain some subtle effects in low light.
5. Anti-camera shake technology reduces blur on photographs. You can often get this blue with very light-weight cameras.
6. Rapid start-up time. From switching-on to shooting can be very, very quick. No long waits for the camera to get functioning.

CONS

1. Sony Memory Sticks are on the expensive side.
2. You cannot zoom at the same time as you shoot a movie. So a limited ability to make 'Hollywood'-type zooming and tracking shots.
3. Still a slight possibility of some camera blur - despite the technology.
4. Tendency to make very low-light pictures a little 'rich' in colour - a bit like an Old Master.

The CONS are, for me, relatively minor.

I have not the slightest hesitation in recommending this camera far and wide, no matter the user. [I have no connection with Sony or the photographic industry]

The W100 is an OK ultracompact as far they go (which ain't far, in my opinion):

You'll have problems with redeye (ALL small cameras have trouble with redeye because of flash placement issues) and the occassional problem with white balance. But, in general, it will take decent pictures.

However, I think Canon makes better products than Sony in this class of camera. The Digital ELPH series performs consistently well across its various versions (I think the 7 megapixel SD900 is the newest model). There is also the 8 megapixel S80. Although nice, that camera is ridiculously expensive for what it is. If you are going to lay down 7 or 800 bucks on a camera, buy an entry level dSLR or Sony DSC-R1 already.

If you happened to buy a DSC-N1 from Sony you have an excellent camera. I have one and the pix it produces are outstanding! As with any camera you need to read the owner's manual and just start shooting pictures. You won't be disappointed.

Cybershot is one of the overall brands, which model is it?

I also had a Sony DSC-P200. It is one hell of a camera and a total steal for the $200 I paid for it. I have friends that own both DSC- and DSC-W series and all of them love their Sonys.

As far as I can tell, Sony doesn't have an 8.1MP camera. Here's their line-up: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/
