Is a message in tounges a gift of God, or just acting religious for the praise of men, as outlined in Matthew Chapter 6?

Speaking in tongues is presumed to be an evidence of the baptism of the holy spirit, since it occured at those times spontaneously. It can be real or hyocritical, like anything else.

Hoping the best for you...

The Gift of Foreign Tongues is not hypocrisy. It is an actual Gift of the Holy Spirit. During recent history the best known person so gifted was Padre Pio. He could hear confession in languages he had never studied, understand and offer absolution to the penitent in the penitent's own language.

Today the Gift of Foreign Tongues is confused with "strange tongues" which is prattling, an emotional release which leaves the believer feeling edified.

Some author who wrote under the pseudonym of The Publican published a very interesting title one year: The Tongues of Satan. Good read for those who are interested. I don't know if it is still in print and I don't remember who published it.

Like everything else it depends on the source. Check Corinthians Chapters 12 and 14. There is also a difference in "speaking "in tongues and God giving you the "gift" of tongues.

Speaking in tongues- most don't understand you and you are talking directly to God

Gift of tongues-you are able to speak in a different language that some others will understand. A language different than your native tongue for example. That is why it says "tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers". (Pay attention to the end of ch 14 )Then go to Acts Chapter 2 to see an example of when the apostles received the gift of tongues and started speaking in many different languages for the unbelievers.

Then make your own decision.

It is not from God. It is a very cheap imitation of the bible gift of tongues. According to the bible the tongues was human languages that was understood by those of foreign tongues or languages in the audience on the day of Pentecost. Today no one understands them because it is one of two things. Either a psychological phenomena brought on by strong desire to do this and trying and a charged up service and it is also faked many times.

Remember Marjoe Gortner? I did a search on his name the other day and a interview came up that he gave and he did a demonstration of how preachers and others learn to fake this so called language.

Also, if you spend a lot of time in these churches that speak in tongues you will notice a pattern and most of the times it is the same thing over and over.. It is a delusion and fakery to control the members and the ones who experience this phenomena psychologicaly are deceived and delusioned into believing they are more Holy than those who do not speak in this gibberish. It gives them a license to be a royal pain in the kahoachie.

Hypocrisy. The whole speaking in tounges thing got way out of hand and is totally down to Matthew drinking far to much one evening before a sermon he was scheduled to give. To offset the damage it would have down by being openly drunk he made up the whole tounges thing and since then people throughout history have jumped on it as a sign of my affection. Needless to say, its rubbish, and I should know!

In the bible, the 'gift of tongues' meant that anyone could understand your speech, no matter what language they spoke. For example, someone who had the 'gift of tongues' could be speaking to a crowd in Greek, and people who DID NOT UNDERSTAND Greek would hear and understand the speaker as if he were speaking in their own language... just like the 'babblefish' in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Somewhere along the line, Christians got the idea that if they babbled incoherently, they were 'speaking in tongues'... and being touched by the Holy Spirit. It is actually just hysteria-induced gibberish.

Of course, just like the 'babblefish', this is pure horseshit. It was horseshit in biblical times... it is horseshit now... it will still be horseshit tomorrow.

Some people actually believe when they spew stuff out of their mouth that sounds weird-- it's a gift of the holy spirit.
I went to a pentecostal church for years, and the people that had the "gift" would repeat the same phrase over and over. "Ma shandala Ma shear" is one of my favorites. Said in a shaky, shamanic voice... lol. Love it.

I'm not saying that it couldn't happen, BUT I never saw a display that I believed.

Good question.

Scripture says if there is noone to interpret the tongues, they should remain silent. But I wouldn't ask anyone to refrain from
speaking in tongues.

Robert Tilton (televangelist) spoke in tongues all the time while begging for $1000 donations. God spoke through him and said "Whether you can afford it or not, send this guy a thousand bucks and your prayers will be answered."

It is foolishness. If you want to let out pent up frustrations which this obviously is buy a punching bag. To label something this foolish as a God sent thing is a slap in his face. If God wanted you to say something in his name he is not going to make you speak gibberish. What sense is there in that?
