I guess you're looking for some tuning tips to give you more power - but the CHEAPEST way to make you car faster accelerating is to reduce weight. Take a critical look at the car and ask yourself what parts you actually need on it. In a weekend you could easily shed 50 kg which is enough to make a noticeable difference in performance - faster accelerating, faster braking and better cornering. Unlikely to have any impact on top speed, but will also help fuel economy.
Easy items to shed are:
1. Spare tire, jack, toolkit
2. Sound proofing (under carpets, under hood, inside door panels)
3. Accessories (radio, speakers, aerial, air con, floor mats inc boot, body trim, wheel covers)
4. Back seats, parcel shelf, door cards
Otherwise, speed costs money - how fast do you wanna go? try a google search for "performance chip ford escort". Bon chance.

Drop the price in the for sale advert in Tesco.
If you want more performance
1) check the throtle is opening fully, carpets under the pedal often prevent this, or
2) Fit a bigger engine, but dont tell the insurance of they will throw a fit, or
3) if you are contracted to drive an escort get a bigger engined escort or if not get something decent.

Firstly change plugs, leads, oil and filter. replace air filter with a K&N unit. Get the timing adjusted, swap the exhaust system. Change your 1.4 gear box to a Fiesta 1.1 box, Gear ratios will be lower and will increace accleration alot but loosing top end speed if using a 4 speed box, try to find a weber carburretor from the mk 2 fiesta 1.4S this will also help you gain more performance due to the larger jets. Trust me these are tried and tested method from when my mates and i played with small insurable engines. Happy days.

Is it fuel injection? If so buy a small resistor availible on ebay which fits in between the coolant temp sensor or intake air temp sensor and the wiring harness which fools the ecu about engine temp which in turn causes more fuel to enter the engine thus an increase of about 20-25 HP. It realy works!!!

Push it out the back of a Hercules cargo plane!
Then you can impress your mates in McDonalds car park with stories of it's stopping power as well. It did 0-200mph in 6 secs and 200-0 in less than 1 second!
