That depends entirely on what range you need.
The 17-55mm f/2.8 is brilliant up close and a great walk around lens ($1200).
The 70-200mm f/2.8 is fantastic for most other stuff ($1600)
If you need more reach than 200mm (effectively 300mm on a D200), add a 1.4 tele-converter, or get one of Nikon's ludicrously expensive long lenses - they have a great 200-400mm and several primes.

I agree with OMG. It depends on how close you will be able to get. I own and love both lens he mentions. If you can buy both, go for it. The 17-55 is a pretty fast lens and great for indoor work. The 18-200 has VR, though, which might "buy" you the low light level that you need without going all the way to f/2.8 for $1,200.

If you want to buy ONE lens, get the 18-200 VR zoom, if you can find it anywhere. Here's the description at B&H:

you would be shooting the two landscapes and closeups of organic international, so at a minimum the 12-24mm and a few thing that has a minimum of a 300mm focal length could be superb. The kit I take with me is the 12-24mm, 24-85mm f/2.8 macro and the 70-300mm ED. I doubt which you will shoot the ten.5mm fish-eye (I choose I had, had one on my crusing holiday this previous summer), yet you in no way understand. I carry 2 D200's and 3 lenses in any respect cases in my backpack alongside with 4-4GB enjoying cards and six-2GB enjoying cards. you desire to to deliver your own laptop with you so which you will burn backups of all your photos each and every nighttime for the time of your down time. get exhilaration from your holiday! Shoot early and shoot generally ... movie is low-priced.
