This has been asked before and I can't understand where the idea that dogs can't look up comes from.

Many dogs look directly up into the sky when they are attracted by a bird or a plane or a drifting balloon or whatever else might be up there. They also look up directly at their owners face - this includes tiny dogs who have to put their head right back in order to look up to our height.

However when dogs are following a trail they keep their head down and follow the trail with their nose (apart from sight hounds who obviously as the name implies hunt by sight).

If a dog was following a scent trail and the quarry jumped up into a tree or onto a wall the dog will frantically search around with its nose for the scent. It will not usually look up because its brain is totally focused on the scent.

An experienced hunting dog will learn that the squirrel or cat has gone up the tree and will prance about looking upwards. As far as I know dogs have not learned to scan nearby trees in case the animal has jumped from one tree to another!

All it really needs to answer this question is basic common sense and observation.

Dogs can look up, but the do have tunnel vision, which means they have less vision then humans and their view is in tunneled andthey can only see whats in front of them at any given time.

Of course Dogs can look up. They have exactly the same organs and "bits" as we do whether that be Eyes, Nose, Lungs etc. What we can do they can do minus the talking.

My dog can look up, and sometimes rolls his eyes at us as well. He is very keen to everything going on around him, especially outside. He even watches airplanes!

You may have misunderstood someone. When two dogs are together and trying to vie for dominancy -- one will end up not being able to look up at the other...

Perhaps that is what you were thinking of. If not - please ignore this response.
