You are correct, I only opened this answer page because of the
spelling of "grammer" - Yes, it is so bad, I think that most of the
Q&A is a competition on how bad and ridiculous you can
get. Many words, or expressions - I do not know what they
mean, I am beginning to feel that I am a little old or just plain
dumb.

There's a lot of reasons, mostly because of society today, however. Most kids now have cell-phones, and they use them to text message their friends. Instead of writing the 'long' "How are you?" they tend to shorten it to, "how r u?" After doing it for a long time, it quickly becomes habit, and they can't stop it when they're on the web or on their phone. Chat rooms are also part of the problem.

Another reason might be because of America's "Time" issue. Instant gratification is what we want, so short, simple, chopped up posts save us time, then just click 'preview' and 'submit' and you're done!

Schools, like others said, also pose a problem. They don't care so much about spelling, and some junior high schools have just stopped giving spelling tests, or, instead of having them once a week, have taken the number down to once every two weeks, or just once a month.

I hope this helps you in the quest for good grammar and spelling.

The poor grammar can be accounted for by realizing that this is an international site. Some of the participants are using English as a second or third language and are in the process of learning how to use our very difficult verbiage. Others are in a hurry and don't realize there is a spell check or do not know how to utilize the benefit.

A mixture of both I think. Schools do not seem to bother so much these days about spelling & grammar, which is a shame because there is nothing worse than opening a letter & having to work out the meaning of sentences & words because the punctuation is in all the wrong places.

I was going to say that you are one of them. Since you added that you spelled grammar that way deliberately, you must be in the advertising business. Business folks used to use the ploy of turning the letter N around backwards on their signs along the highway. Passersby would stop in at their business to tell them that their N was backwards!

To answer your question, I think a lot of it has to do with people from countries that have a native language other than English are guessing at the spelling of English words by using a phonetic spelling.

Good question! I believe even non English speaking members to this site either don't have or may not use "Check Spelling" properly. If you don't understand a language it's difficult to check your spelling -- forget grammar. My Sis doesn't have the feature on her computer so can't use it. I try to talk to my Grand Daughter on IM and it's awful. She has gotten so used to misspelling words I think it will cause problems later on. I asked why she did it and her answer was "Everybody does and cute guys like it" OH Brother!!!

IQs range from 30 to 200 and ages range from 2 to 140 so we have variety. Maybe 70% are average but that leaves 30% way different than most.

I am a bad speller when I am typing.
It's because everyone who uses Instant Messaging are used to typing short hand words.
I use MSN Messenger and I tend to use short hand words quite a lot and now its just like very word that I type its shrotened.
I take every opporrtunity now to start spelling words correctly!

Because they don't know how to use the spell checker, and think others will be mature enough to forgive a few spelling errors (like your spelling of the word grammar).

Much of it is sheer laziness. Some people are so enamored with text messaging that they can't "turn it off," and they simply cannot post here without those inane abbreviations. Others are overly reliant on SpellCheck and have forgotten how to do remedial proofreading.

It's rough to think that their laziness is possibly being "understood" rather than *abolished.*
