Attending a funeral is to comfort the living, not for the dead. They don't know you attended anyway!

We mourn both. Of course, we mourn our own loss. But depending on the circumstances, if the death was particularly tragic, I also mourn the lost opportunities of the departed. Their 'book' is closed, so to speak. They can not change anything now. Sometimes that is as tragic and painful a thought as our loss.
Hoping the best for you...

You mourn your own loss. The departed does not mourn his / her own passing. We mourn the loss that we feel in our lives from losing someone close to us. It is you who feels the sorrow not the departed.
The funeral is never for the deceased. It is a ritual we use to try and console ourselves.

Depends how you define "loss." We mourn the losing of the person who departed. It is the person who is lost. We have the loss, the departed is the loss. A quote I came across in a book once says it well, IMO. "It is the survivors who suffer."

We only mourn the physical loss of that being because they are a part of a spiritual existence now.

Both. We mourn the life stopped short in our perspective, and the departure of a friend from our normal relationship activites.
Change is part of mourning at times.

The purpose of a funeral is to provide comfort and reassurance to those that have suffered a great loss. We are assured of the love God has for us and for the one who has gone on to the next life.

We only mourn because we are selfish. We as humans have a hard time of "letting go". If you believe in the afterlife, then why mourn? Will you not see them again?
If you DON'T believe in the afterlife, then you are mourning for yourself 'cause you know you'll be there soon.

The dead person is just dead, they aren't sad because they no longer exist. We mourn our own loss of the person.
You're asking a lot of dark questions. You ought to go watch some Family Guy or something to cheer yourself up :)

I've only attended one funeral and my over riding feeling was a sense of sadness and loss, and a realisation that I would never be seeing the person again in this lifetime.

I've never understood all the wailers and things at funerals. Some cultures celebrate at a funeral.
