I am considering opening a pet store in the northeast and I would like to get some input from dog and cat owners as to what they feel would be important to them. First, let me say I will not be selling pets (only supplies), however, I would like to do a pet of the week, for example a local cat or dog available from a local shelter or rescue organization. I will sell only premium cat and dog foods, such as wellness, solid gold, etc. Of course I am a pet lover, and know what I like to see, however, I would like to get other opinions on this. Thank you all for your time, I appreciate it.

I would research some successful pet supply chain stores & how they began.
Unfortunately the avereage pet owner does not have enough cash in todays economy to buy the premium brands all the time, even though they may want to, so..... I would also research different pet foods.
Check the quality of the foods & then have a decent range of prices for people to choose from without compromising thr quality of the food too much.

I would also have a rescue adoption day every month where local rescue agencies can bring in a few dogs & cats for people to adopt. this will help them with extra exposure & will bring in new customers to your store!

Homemade pet treats are always a great idea. Get some recipes & have some on hand for the customers to give their pets when they come in. Who knows you might be able to start a pet treat line of your own!!

Oh, and of course people love to bring their pets in the store with them, so welcome them. Make it a fun day out for the entire family... man & beast!!!

I hope I could help & good luck!! You are doing man & animal kind a good service!!!

If you think limiting yourself to premium dog and cat food will work you can try it. I personally don't think that will work. While it would be nice if everyone fed premium food to their pets. But they don't and some people never will.

That is why Ol Roy sells so well.

I would feature the premium pet foods and keep the other stuff in the back of the store. That is what most pet stores do.

Go check out your competitions lay out.

I always like to patronize the independent feed stores! They all carry Canidae which is in my opinion a life saving dog food. You may want to look into allowing a rescue to hold a pet adoption at your store once a month too. It will bring more people into your store as the rescue will also advertise it. Look at the dirrerent stores around you and see what they DONT offer and try to tailor your store there. Besides carrying hard to find items, allowing other businesses to host event there will bring customers, (i.e. pet photo op's, adoption fairs, dog training resources) Dont forget the exotics!

If you ever get to vacation on Hilton Head Island, SC there is a wonderful store named Tail Waggers -- and they seem to be a success story of how to run a pet store.

They advertise themselves as Gourmet Pet Bakery & Gifts. (There are seem to be enough pet stores around selling premium food.)

They have unusual items in there - wonderful toy selections, fantastic grooming aids, shampoos, homemade treats.

They also made sure to have some "inexpensive" items, so kids can come in and purchase something for their loved one.

Probably be a good market research project for you - and it isn't a bad place to visit.

We need more upscale pet stores! Look at theguildedpaw.com and pamperedpuppy.com for some products/ example lines. Also Pet Flys sells adorable carriers. Good Luck!

Cats needs are quite simple; - water - food - dishes for the above - litter pan with appropriate litter Any cat with those items will be perfectly happy in your home. Cat toys are optional but a piece of balled up tin foil or a plastic bottle lid will do quite nicely. All you need to do is add some love and have the animal vaccinated and checked annually

you should do like homemade dog treats and stuff too
I really like the idea of the pet of the week - may be a good way of getting some pets a much needed loving home
it may also be a good idea to make it kind of like a petco as in you can bring your cat/dog there with you as a lot of pet owners (such as myself) love that idea and love to be able to actually take my pet with me somewhere
