The Father Of Medicine

Hippocrates, Father of Medicine. Hippocrates studied at the temple of Asclepius (god of medicine) on the island of Cos. Asclepius is the guy with the staff with the two snakes twining around (the medical symbol). He was the son of Apollo.

Hippocrates is called the father of medicine because many of the things he taught are still used to this day. He taught that diseases come from natural causes. He also looked at a persons objectively - how they looked. Their skin, eyes, their overall appearance. He taught his students about cleanliness, he taught that patients should eat a moderate amount of food, and that patients should get moderate exercise.

The Hippocratic Oath was named for him. It included rules of conduct that doctors still honor a form of the oath. Interestingly, Pharmacists honor another Oath, which is why Doctors rarely administer lethal injections to prisoners - which is a story for another Answer!

Hippocrates, Physician

* Born: c. 460 BC
* Birthplace: Island of Cos, Greece
* Died: 377 B.C.
* Best Known As: Author of the Hippocratic Oath

Hippocrates is perhaps history's most famous physician. By rejecting superstition in favor of scientific observation, by classifying diseases, and by creating a set of moral and professional standards for physicians, he earned the title of 'Father of Medicine.' He also gave the world the Hippocratic Oath, a code of ethics for physicians which is still taken by graduates at many modern medical schools.
