I'd probably go with a fourth generation hatchback - that's from '88 to '91. They are light weight but can accomodate some pretty powerful engine swaps. Downside is that the motors they have are very underpowered in stock trim.

If you are not planning on an engine swap, though, I'd say get a '99 or 2000 Civic Si (unfortunately, it's not a hatchback). It's got one of the most powerful engines they put in a Civic in the United States, combined with a lot of aftermarket support for the chassis. If you are both unwilling to swap engines and must have a hatchback, go with one of the "toaster" Si models from the seventh generation, the style that came right after 2000. This one is a bit heavier and didn't catch on, but it's the most powerful Civic hatchback sold in the United States.

I AM assuming you're in the United States - elsewhere the models are different.
