I think what is really scary is that some people think doctors are more capable than they are. Of course their work should be called "practice" ; it is the medical ARTS we are talking about here; a relatively new school in the scope of human thought and practice, and one which is just developing out of its infancy. People should not expect medicine to cure them, and should be surprised when it does. Most "breakthroughs" have come through accident or extreme medical practice(wartime,eg.) which would not be tolerated in conventional society.
What term would you use instead of practice?

It could be considered scary, depending on how you look at it. It would be more scary if they called them selves Masters or Experts!! At least, by saying they are practicing, they are being honest.
