I used to be with Telewest but got rid of them when they proved to be expensive, added calls to the the bill I hadnt made and the customer service was a nightmare. I actually went back to BT and havent had any problems but when I was looking around I noticed that the Post Office can provide a line/calls etc. and at a competetive price.

Of course u can, there r loads that supply land lines. I haven't been with BT for years. Talk Talk, Sky, NTL, to name but a few all supply your land line.

Karen, sorry girl u r wrong, Most of the suppliers now have taken over the actual land line from BT. The original person who asked the question, choose which deal suits u best and check with them if they actually own the line.

unless there is a cable operator in your area, and effectively on your street then you are tied to BT for whats called the local loop (ie from the exchange to your home)

living in an area with overhead cables is a problem - they tend to suffer more faults, and can take longer to fix.

Ive always been impressed with the response from BT. the only time there was a problem was then I was working away from home, and once when there was a fault on an underground cable near by which took a while to fix.

As far as I know, you need a BT line for any other phone company. I have NTL but you need the actual BT line on your house. I was told it is because only BT erect the telephone poles and lines and the other companies rent these off them. So you can have any phone company as long as you have the original line.

Another landline provider is NTL, (it used to be cable) they are completely separate to BT (not like these companies where you still pay your line rental to bt) In my area its called telewest but I think everywhere else they are calld NTL. Hope this helps.---Remember all companies like talk talk and sky, others, still use a BT line, you just pay your call charges to them, line rental is paid to BT.

I recently got rid of SBC. They were absolutely horrendous.

I switched to MCI and I love them. Customer Service is actually competent and helpful.

I am with Telewest, I have found they are better than BT, but it depends in which area you live.
