does it look weird to have the trim painted a darker color than the walls? I wanted to do the walls a real light off-white/cream color and the trim a rich brown. (the carpeting is a medium blue and my furniture is brown)

There is no rule which says you must paint woodwork white, or strip it, or color it to merge with the walls. In a room whose walls, window frames and doors are in the same neutral color, you could paint the skirting board a clear contrasting color.

If you paint the walls dark you will have a dark and cold looking room. At least use only one wall in dark as a highlighted type effect. Most all homes in past used wood stained trim and light colored walls. It hasn't changed so must have a good plan in doing it that way. Why change what has always been a good thing? Light colored walls reflect light and will look cleaner. With the trim darker it will accent the walls. Not the reverse. Dark walls do not reflect light so will be gloomy and they tend to look dirty.

I thought it would look nice in my home too. I tried those same colors on the walls/trim. When it was finished it just didn't look right. Everyone who saw it asked me why I did it. I think it's better to use the darker color on the walls with a lighter trim color. If you don't want to paint all the walls brown, you could just choose one wall and paint it brown, then use the lighter color on the other walls.

Yes, dark trim is ugly and makes the room look dated in my opinion. May I suggest painting the walls a nice "coffee with cream" color and painting the trim cream? It will coordinate nicely with blue carpet and look classy.

I like medium blue water in my toilet bowl because I like the way the blue and brown go together. Your room will match my toilet bowl. Nice. AEN
