The good things within humanity come from our spiritual essence-the compassion, tolerance and desire for knowledge. The bad things arise from our free will-material desires, clinging to illusions etc. Spirituality doesn't just play an important role it plays the key role in human development. Where there is only materialist values there is depravity and decay.

Yes - spirituality does play a major role in the development in the human race whether it is on a personal level or on a larger group level with the creation of large organized religions. All one needs to look at is that organization of nearly all early civilizations until today and what you are always going to find symbols and/or buildings that demonstrate the role that organized religions or faith near the seats of political power.

NOT REALLY
If you were to take all the time that you spent
deliberating on these minute questions and
spend that time boxing up and shipping food
to starving peoples in the various parts of
the impoverished world, then, and only then,
would you be making an important contribution
to the development of the human race.
If you have an excess of something, share it
with those who have none at all and are
literally starving to death for lack of it. Wake
up and listen to the cries of the starving all
around you. Develop a sense of decency
and vow to make a difference in this life.
When everyone is free of starvation, then
might be an appropriate time to sit back and
pray or give thanks. Not until then...

It helps us to rise above the pettiness of human nature, (selfishness that leads to self-righteousness),and eventually gain some insight into things.
Like our Creator doesn't make us do anything. If we beak the Law, it's not our Creator that will come after us. It's MAN. And
man has no mercy.
He will lock one up in prison for killing someone in a moment
of rage. And leave him there till his mind and body rots. And won't care.
