There could be many explanations - almost as many as there are people. For example, we tend to forget how recently contraception was universally available (and we forget that the Catholic Church still forbids it) and so many women were worn out by constant childbearing and many men by the drain on their finances. I remember hearing a radio programme about the days before contraception and abortion; the midwife talked about delivering a woman's twelfth child and the mother said Thank God when it was stillborn ... My own mother was in a similar situation - she claimed to have known nothing about sex, found that she was pregnant, 'had to get married' (remember the phrase?) and then found she wasn't pregnant at all. I grew up knowing this and it wasn't much fun, believe me.

Parents' 'bad childhood' may have some part to play simply because they don't experience the skills used by loving parents. I decided not to have children myself simply because I knew, instinctively, that I didn't have the appropriate role-models.

There can be other explanations: maybe the parents don't love each other, which is an important prerequisite. Maybe mother had a bad dose of post-natal depression that wasn't recognised and treated at the proper time. And you can get a vicious cycle in which the babe picks up the parents' tension, becomes 'badly-behaved' as a result, and round and round you go. Personally I hate it when I hear people talk about 'he's a good baby' when they mean 'he's a quiet/easy to look after baby' - what do they mean? that he's not evil?

Hope that lifts the curtain a little. If this is happening to you, think about getting some help, please.

Not many parents do not love their children..
Some parents are not good as showing love and some parents do not make enough time to be with their children due to career obligations...
More children think they are not loved than is actually the case.
In many cases, this is simply insecurity & selfishness on the part of the child.
In the rare cases of parents that do not actually love their children, yes this is a mental problem on the part of the parent.

Hate to say it, but it sort of does stem from the parents upbringing...If their parents didn't display affection how can that be instilled in them...we learn by example...And perhaps they just don't have it in them to love anyone...Can't imagine having a child and not loving them..But geez man, watch the news, people abuse their own children endlessly, how I will NEVER understand!!!.....If you are someone who feels unloved, I am truly sorry that you feel that way, and just remember you can break that cycle when you have children of your own someday....

I think some people are lacking when they are born some genetic or biological "instinct" for parenting. They can't help it. It's sad. The kids suffer and have issues all their lives.
