the number one reason is Self Defense, but people also do it for fitness, because it's an excellent cardio workout, especialy if the discipline has sparring. I always feel better after class, physically tired, but satisfied knowing i've done well and I can sleep soundly at night.

also it's a good stress reliever after a long day at work, and it's a lot of fun with the other people in my class, I've made a lot of life long friends in my classes; because we all love the creative aspect in using the learned techniques and finding new ways to apply them.

it's also very educational for the soul, not just as a fighter or learning how to fight. but it strengthens your character or reinforces your beliefs; giving you a better sense of right and wrong, giving you more of a focus on the things in your life.

it's also a great learning and teaching tool, because you can learn patience, and have fun teaching the junior ranks because you're giving back by teaching what you've learned.

I started Martial Arts because I was always quick to fight anyone who would get in my face and had no patience, but since I first started taking Martial Arts; I've learned a better meaning of why it's better not to fight.

Our system caters to three goals.
1) Perfection of character
2) Physical fitness
3) Self-defense

Originally I began to train because I needed discipline. I was an unruly teenager who had lost his identity because of some traumatic events.
I saw the self-defense value and stayed with it. In the first 4 yrs I liked to kumite all the time.
After that I was diagnosed with a disease that began to rob me of my mobility. At this time I trained to keep my spirits up and get what exercise I could under the circumstances. Finally, after several years of this a medicine was invented that gave me back my mobility and I got into hardcore training again. Now, after 13yrs in the arts I enjoy discovering the subtle secrets of the art and helping others on their way.

If you have a good head on your shoulders the risk of a street fight drops greatly. I am prepared if am ever attacked but mostly I study for the principle of improving the self.
In life you will fight more inner-demons that outer-demons. I also enjoy it, it is fun, I can't picture myself not doing it.

The reasons for taking he arts are individual to each practitioner.

Some people do the martial arts because they want to defend themselves or, they just have an interest in them.

Excercise, discovering how many ways to inflict pain upon another person, etc.

I know some for the off chance someone tries to mug/rape/whatever me and I somehow don't manage to fight them off with 2 fully loaded guns of doom.

It also comes in quite handy in case your doomsday device doesn't work against that danged superhero and the aliens try to invade the planet and you don't wanna be defenseless when unarmed, BECAUSE I AM NOT CRAZY, OKAY!? Insane, on the other hand...

for self-preservation. My sister got a black belt in karate, which is a cleaner fight for her. If she "street fights" someone it would be horrible for the recipient ! She works at a "facility" where knowing how to protect yourself is a really good asset.
