The pearly gates are not in Heaven but in the City of New Jerusalem.
Revelation 21:21
21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.

Notice also the streets of gold.
But I like best the trees along the river in chapter 22:
1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

That may just be an expression. We experience things in spirit
that go along with our understnding and desire.
I knew a psychic that travelled to an Emerald City. It was made of
emeralds. The people were green, and she spoke to some
Queen or King she said.
I travelled spiritually once to a place where there were pointy
mountains in the clouds. I was going toward this building of
some kind, like I've never seen. I got close and saw the light
coming from windows. But something made me afraid,
and I lost the rest of the experience.
I also travelled to a world where there were men and women with wings. One saw me and started shooting arrows at me. I
remember saying, "I'll just go to another world", and jumped into the clouds.
The next thing I knew I was looking up, and saw something that
looked familiar, but it wasn't quite right. I woke up, and after a minute I realized I had just seen my room from the floor. Like
my spirit came up through the floor when I returned, and I saw
my room as it looked from the level of the floor.

The narrow gate leads to heaven. Few find it. The gate is the voice of Christ. The pearls are the white teeth that enunciate the sound. The mouth is still mysterious though, because of its many uses. Perhaps it is a wedding kiss... The gold streets are emblematic of great treasure almost beyond imagination.

Natural pearls are made through pain, suffering and eventually death. Jesus had pain, suffering and death on the cross. In Matthew 13:45-46, Jesus gives us a parable about a pearl of great price. I believe the pearl represents Jesus himself. In John 10:1-18, it is clear that Jesus is the Good Shepherd, who gives His life for His sheep. He is therefore the door by which, if any man enters in, he shall be saved. In John 14:6, Jesus states" I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. I do believe the pearls represent He who gave His life for us. Through Him (The Gatekeeper) we can be forgiven and enter into heaven

I think that's to attract old ladies, who are rather partial to pearls.
Possibly also the old gay men.
I can only presume the rest of us are expected to go to hell.
