hi,
twich this past month i've been having dreams of going to the bathroom...and thought they were real! This is so embarassing... and I'm not sure if this happens to other people, or if i should make a big deal out of this...I dream a lot, and have a hard time distinguishing my dreams from reality during sleep...they are very vivid. I'm not sure if this is some form of dementia, or stress (i just moved to nyc and recently got engaged.) Anyway, what do you think? no big deal? should i wait and see if it happens again? does this happen to many people? I don't have incontinence problems. I'm young and healthy. let me know what you think...

I would have to put my money on stress! Most definitely... U r actually very lucky to be able to dream the way u do... I would suggest doing a bit of research on "Lucid Dreaming". Work on developing your ability to control your lucid dreams.. I have found that in doing so, one is able to explore and workout any subconscious and or convince stresses that one might be dealing with... Lastly, u r not alone in these dreams u described.. It has happened to me before.. Froid would say that its is representative of ones feelings of self control or lack of control. Holding it to prove self control and visa versa... But then again he was a huge coke head so go figure... Above all, DON"T worry about it!! Just try exploring your current self and situation and see if u don't just stumble across the source... Best of luck with your new town, new marriage and of course, your sleep;)

Unfortunately I've been there, done that, too, and I'm 28... I think it happens to a lot more young adults than you would think! From what I've read, I think it's the need to urinate that causes the dream to happen, and not the other way around... the dream is your brain's way of trying to signal your conscious mind that your bladder is really full and needs to be emptied, pronto, but the signals get crossed somehow and it just lets go in your sleep.

Did you ever have a problem with bedwetting when you were a kid (like, older than the age of 5)? It's really common for "relapses" like this to occur in adults who had childhood bedwetting problems, especially if you're really tired or under a lot of stress. Sounds like your recent move to nyc and engagement probably have made you fit both categories! Even if you didn't wet the bed as a kid, being tired and stressed might still cause this to happen, but it would be somewhat more unusual. In any case, as long as you don't have any symptoms of a UTI (unusual pain, burning, or frequency during the daytime), it is probably a simple matter of "crossed signals" between your bladder and brain, and no long term threat to your health. You might wait until you're adjusted to your move for a little longer and see if the problem resolves on its own. If not, maybe have a doctor check it out -- you might have a mild case of "overactive bladder" or some such condition for which there might be a med that helps.

When I was finishing high school I wet the bed, not once - twice.
(go on people - poke fun and laugh).
It started that I felt I wanted to pee, but I just kept dreaming. I had a dream that I was urinating, and I woke up because, well, I was urinating. I freaked out more than you can imagine. I had no idea what was going on.
Basically, I was sleep deprived, overworked and stressed.
There was nothing wrong with me, it was entirely situational.
When you dream, you allow your primal brain to work. It helps you work things out and think properly.
I think your body and your mind are stressed about something, and something has to give. When you sleep, you finally relax - relax enough to let go of something; which is making you wet the bed.
Being in control of your faculties but wetting the bed doesn't mean you have dementia - dementia is something you can worry about in twenty years time when you can't remember if you drove to work or caught the bus.
I have vivid dreams too, always have. But I can control them.
It's weird, now, I can dream about wanting to go to the bathroom, and I can wake up and go. I realise that it's not something that makes sense in the dream, so I know it's not part of the dream - it's my body telling me to do something.
Well, it's more that I make myself wake up and go, just in case.

You should be fine, just relax. Try not to stress too much before bed, try to enjoy sleeping more.
Until you calm down and sleep better, go to the bathroom just before you go to bed, it can't hurt.
In the long run - you'll eventually work out why you're stressed.
Maybe your brain is telling you to let something go? To release some burden?

Not common but not unheard of. You are unlikely to have dementia at 29. I had that dream once, it is deadly.

I think this can happen in a new environment. Just wait and let it settle down.

If you are taking any sleeping pills - I would advise stopping. You are too far asleep for your wake up response to work.

You are going to the toilet last thing before bed aren't you?

Umm, in all seriousness you should see a Doctor. This is not normal. You might want to participate in a sleep study program, so that they can monitor you while you sleep (you can get paid for this too) But, it's likely that this is just stress related, however, you still need to address it, medically. Consider if you've changed your daily habits ie: eating, drinking, drugs, etc.....It may very well be your bodys way of telling you that you made the wrong decision, and it's creating these symptoms as a warning call. Either way - see a Doctor, and also consult a therapist. Talk about these changes in your life and get a professional opinion.

You are not alone... been there, done that...
On top of it all, I take HCTZ, which is a diuretic. That aggravates the situation. And I have "dreamed" that I woke up and went to the restroom to "go." Talk about weird -- dreaming that you woke up!

One thing I did was to force myself to realize that if/when I am dreaming about going to restroom, to WAKE UP! Sort of like an alarm trigger. Seems to be working okay now... (I do have stresses, so that could be a factor, as noted by others...???)

That has never happened to me before. But one time I dreamt that I was spitting... And when I woke up I was covered with drool. Haha. Maybe you're just stressed. I think it'll go away soon. Good luck!
