when he found out his girlfriend was pregnant and he supposidly had nothing to do with it?, i bring up 2 stepchildren and it is hard work, i know the father .. suppose i would never trust my girlfriend if she suddenly became pregnant whilst i was with her , and then on top of that have to bring up the child as my own knowing that my girlfriend had most likely been unfaithful... i feel sorry for Joseph

moreover, he had no sexual relationship with her
one can take it as, probably Fod tested St. Joesph's faith through this.

That's why they have the part about the angel coming to him in a dream.
What was Joseph needed for anyway? He's just an unnecessary character in the story.
