It depends on the age of the mum. For mums 40 and up, the odds can be as high as 1 in 25.

You answered your own question and average percentage is 1 in 285 i believe. Is it high it is not low is it like 1 in four or 1 in 25 ? So on that basis the risk depends on what each person wants to take. Some would see 1 in 285 as it will never happen and others see it as to much of a risk and think they may be the 1 in 285.
Having a child is very risky anyway downs or not it is a huge risk and up to the couple if they want to take it.Millions do and everything is OK.
My first child was born with very rare condition undiagnosed we where given 1 in 4 for our next child because child was our first so odds where high. We took a very long time to make up our minds if we wanted to take a risk years in fact. We did and second and third child perfect.
Sometimes life is worth taking that risk my own view.

1 in 285 is a bit higher than average - the average is around 1 in 800 - but it isn't high enough to worry especially about.

To put it into context, roughly 3% of all babies are born with a significant congenital defect. The chance of Downs in this case is therefore still only a tenth of the risk that all parents face of some other, unspecified problem occurring.

This is actually 0.003509 percent. Percent is the proportion out of one hundred. 1 in 285 is a fraction but not a percentile fraction.

Sorry for being pedantic about this.

Anyway I do think this is a high percantage for any genetic disorder of this nature, especially as Downes is a form of trisomey and therefore is not an inherited condition in the usual sense.

Em .. im not sure, but i do know that you are more likely to have downs baby if you are over the age of 40. But if you are over 40 and if you are fit you have nothing to worry about.

Don't worry Julie all babies are lovely and so are their mum's.
If perchance you do have one you will love it more than ever if that is possible.
