To respond to few other answers first: While it is cold and dark in the winter (duh), it is pleasant to hot in the summer with 19-21 hours of daylight.

It is not an especially dangerous place, although there is big wilderness, big water, and a long winter and if you take risks, they can catch up with you more here than elsewhere.

The "10 guys to every woman" was only ever true in areas with lots of pipeline workers in the mid-70's. Among young adults, it is pretty much 50-50.

My own thoughts: Don't come to escape problems elsewhere. Anyone who does that ends up with the same problems but living with a long winter, too. Come up if you really want to be surrounding by gorgeous scenery or want all the outdoors opportunities.

I've seen families bring up kids because they were starting to get into trouble in metropolitian areas in the 48 states and have that work well. You can't be a mall-rat if there are no malls. You can still toilet-paper someone's house or steal things or screw up in many ways, but you can't do it annonymously in a small town. Everyone recognizes your car, while you drive, and where it is parked. In many ways, even at twice the size of Texas, it is a small state. I can be 500 miles from home and frequently bump into people I know.

While there are tiny small towns off the road system, no one moves there (except teachers, docs, etc). The cities on the road system all have Safeway, Blockbuster, Wall-mart, etc. We have cell phones and iPods and laptops like everywhere else. But travel to "Outside" is bothersome - you can't just drive to another state in an afternoon.

Moving here by yourself? Like anywhere, you'd best have a job lined up and be ready to bust your butt and make a good impression from the start. Ideally have some friends or relatives to help you get settled and to be a home base for a while. It is easier to get to know people, since a lot of Alaskans have moved many times themselves, but you need to make the effort.

With your family? A lot easier. Repost with a specific location and I could give more specific info.

Good luck.

Well, I'm not sure if it's true, but they say that people get depressed a lot in Alaska. It has something to do with the sun: less sunny days or hours, as i said, I'm not sure. The thing is, the age of 15 and 16 is really difficult for some people and with some specifics, can get depressed really easily i guess.

I have lived in Alaska for 37 years. I have nephews and neices. They are 15, 16 and 17. They are very happy here. What city will you be living in? I live in Anchorage, which is the largest city.

Are you interested in fishing and hiking? It is great here for that. The schools all have the usual sports, baseball, basketball, football and hockey. All of the schools have swimming pools. There is a college in Anchorage and Fairbanks if you plan on staying after you finish high school.

It does get cold here, but everything is heated and we wear coats. This summer was not very nice, but we can have great summers. It is light very late during the summer.

If you have any specific questions or if you want to let me know what city you will be living in, you can email me at Patti99515@yahoo.com

Is your family moving, or, will you be staying with relatives? Alaska is very cold, and dark! It may not be exciting for someone your age.

Maybe someone from Alaska will answer your question.

I like Anchorage and the wilderness areas.
