There are too many things going around in your mind. If you don't want to take some over the counter stuff like valerian, melatonine (or deal with doctors) - which can mess around with your mind too ! - try that little trick : it is so boring because it kind of works..but it is boring and that is the reason why it works - for me anyway - : concentrate on a BORING object : a stone, kettle or whatever and visualise it in your mind and stop thoughts from coming through. Hold the picture in your mind's eye and just try to concentrate on that. It takes a bit of practice at first to stop thoughts from invading whilst also relaxing your body but after a while it should work. It is aimed to make your mind shut down. Of course it is also good to air whatever is on your mind too and like Bunstihl said , write them down on paper.
Keeping a regular schedule would also help otherwise it messes up with your metabolism also. The brain is naturally conditioned to shut down at certain times. Don't force yourself to stay awake whilst you should really be resting.
Some methods will work with some people whilst others wont. Acupuncture, Reiki, even scented candles.......up to you to try to find out what will be the best remedy suited to you.
Good luck.
PS: or try some mushrooms.......and I do not mean the weird kinds :-)

What you need to do right now is rent Shrek 2 @ from the video store and especially watch the first 30 minutes. It is hilarious and will help you sleep better than anything else long term. I enjoy remembering the funny scenes from this movie because it helps me sleep to the point where I always fall asleep in 5 minutes from when i lay down. And i was a serious insomniac taking various drugs to fall asleep, stay alseep and in surgery they could not even put me out with anesthesia! I was awful.
Then I approached insomnia just like any other skill: learn from those best at sleeping. Who is that? Kids and teenagers, of course. The answer to insomnia is so obvious when you consider this but no one else has done this besides me. Bill Gates was also an amazing sleeper. Per the biography "Hard Drive" about him, he would get on a plane, put a blanket over his head when he sat down and fall soundly asleep for the whole flight. Or he would work until late at night and fall sound asleep on the floor and not wake up the next day even though customer were stepping over his body while the lights were on. Why? Because in this book it says again and again he was "childlike", loved to dance and joke around.
You need to get this point. If you want to sleep you need to lighten up and be childlike. Kids love to joke around. Learn new jokes by listening to Jay Leno or check out ahajokes.com, etc. Spend time with kids doing things they enjoy like eating ice cream and you will in fact become more lighthearted. Insomniacs are way too serious and stern. That is why they have no peace reserves to sleep well. You need to to listen to rock n roll if you listened to that as a teenager.
Spend time with dogs. Kids love dogs and, interesting, my five year bought with insomnia began when i got rid of my dog. Now I have pupply pictues as the background on my PC. this approach works better than any drug or other tip or technique but it does take time, maybe months, but the process is very fun because you will laugh easier and more often.

I also suffer from insomnia....i try hot relaxing baths that do work from time to time. reading a book will sometimes help. i also use an over the counter sleep aid like tylenol pm that helps. if you have benadryl on hand at home they to do help. I have suffered insomnia for many years started when a child. I have been to numerous sleep clinics and doctors that recommended the above treatments. you may also talk with your doctor if this is an ongoing situation about the prescription sleep aids such as Lunesta Ambien, etc

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

Insomnia? What is it?
I am glad I do not suffer from it these days.
I have to get up too early in the morning and I don't have time to take any nap during the daytime: too much fun at Y360--trying to learn comp-tech, and I am often "busy" sending/reading messages from friends whenever I have free time from my work no matter how short the free time maybe....
Sorry, not exactly a good answer.
BTW, I JUST HOPE YAHOO HIGER-UPS WON'T SEND ME A VIOLATION NOTICE SAYING THAT IT DID NOT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. hehehehe...

You can do some relaxation stuff in bed - coz that relaxes both ur mind and body. Like taking 10 deep slow breaths.... and everytime you breathe out, relax everything, and force your mind to slowly turn off with every breath. I'm normally asleep by the 6th breath....
Also, start with your feet - and make them feel really heavy and tired..... concentrate really really hard on them and do that for a while. Then call them "asleep" and dont move them anymore. Then do the same with your lower legs, upper legs, torso, arms, and finally head. When you get to your head start controlling your breathing and listening to sounds around you. That works every time too. The longer you spend on each part, the more effective it is, i guess...
Hope they help! They get me to sleep every night...

I asked a similar question on here a long time ago and the best advice I received was to write and get all my thoughts out on paper before going to bed. I find when I can't sleep it's mostly because I can't stop thinking.

Ambien. works for me.
But right now? An herb tea like Sleepytime or Tension Tamer if you have it. Some people say warm milk, but I've never tried it.
