Every type of organised religion infringes on civil liberty and civil rights because they are all about control, power, influence and dare I say it, money.

Define 'modernity' & 'civil liberty'? The legalization of prostitution?

Does modernity have to equal with being Western? I disagree. Islamic values are beautiful (note: forcing women to wear the hijab (head scarf) is not an Islamic value by the way). Some religious leaders have abused their power, I agree. But I don't think we should leave our Islamic values so people say we are modern.

You know I used to be the kind of person who thought Islam wasn't modern, but I was a lot younger back then. Now that I have a greater understanding of my religion I realized a lot of things. I used to want to be as Western as possible, until I moved to a Western country and realised not all their values are as amazing as I thought! I was raised in a social circle that thinks everything Western is 'modern' but I'm now proud to be a Muslim, and I am proud of my Islamic values and Malay culture :)

Iran is a democratic society, to a point. They use shriah law as a corner stone to their state laws, and it depends on the judge who interprets that law.

In all western countries we are facing an errosion of our civil liberties by governments who want more control, and they do so in the name of protection, not religion. The people who live in those countries we seek to condemn probably see our societies as enathema not becuase of words, but because of actions.

The Shah of Iran, Sadam Hussain, King Fasal of Saudi Arabia, and many other arab leaders were put in place, or have the tacit approval, of the west. Now the situation is no longer unde the west's control we vilify the very same people we helped put into power.

The lack of civil rights has nothing to do with religion.

There are countries where the majority is Christian and they still have dictatorships, which Iran actually has not. They voted for their current president, and he only had a small majority over his competitor.

Wherever religion is mixed up with the state, you get disregard for human rights, look at the US today. If the fundamentalist Christians got their way not much would be left of civil rights there either.

Since you are leading the question, friend, I would have to say you have it backward. Iran doesn't condemn civil liberty and civil rights. They just refuse to lose their Islamic roots, and to be bullied by the Bush Administration. Their leader is amazing, and not to be messed with. That's why G.W.Bush would poop his pants if he ever had to meet face to face with Ahmedinajad.

you should understand might is right. It is the western propaganda that says there is no human right in Iran. West has a double standard in all the things. For example they want democarcy in Middle east, why not in Saudi Arabia or Egypt. And when the palestinian people voted they say Hamas is an extremist organisation. i don't know how they reason

Almost all of them.

Nearly every religion is sexist. Take Catholics, they only recently allowed female priests, but what do you think the chances are of there being a female archbishop or pope - the answer being nil.

Most other religions are the same.

At a local level, many religions benefit the community, but at higher levels, they are all just power hungry bigots.

All religions have supressed the populace for the aggrandisement of the church hierarchy at some point of other. It is a pity People cannot walk with God in their own way!
