Any advice would be very helpful at this point. For the last 3 days, my two yr old son, has been sick. Right now it's just runny nose, and coughing. yes I am taking him to the doctor, on monday if I can get him in. He has never really been sick, so we have been really lucky. The thing is, the last 3 days. It's almost like he has had an energy boost. I dont give him a lot of sweets, so I dont think it's that. He does not want to sleep, therefor I am not sleeping. I try to be understanding, but he is going for like 12 hour stretches with no nap. Then when he does sleep, which isnt until the wee hours of the morning. He is only sleeping about 5 hours. That is out of 24 hours. I want to help make him comfortable, and relaxed. I just dont know what to do at this point. If anyone has any pointers, please feel free to share. Also, keep in mind this has never happened before. So, I as well am still learning. Thank You!!

As a mother of two and a pharmacist in training...Try benadryl cold or just plain benadryl... it will help him rest and also dry up the sinuses which will in turn help the cough. Anything with DM (dextromethorphan) will help control his cough to sleep through the night and the antihistimine in the benadryl will make him drowsy. Check with a pharmacist at 1-800-Walgreens they will connect you with a pharmacist that can give you dosing for age and weight. Good luck... it will get better.

If he only has a runny nose and cough don't bother with the dr, it's just a cold.
They have some great cold medications for little guys out there.
He's not sleeping becuase he's sick and probably can't breath well when he's lying down. Try running a very hot shower and sit in the bathroom with him with the door shut. Breath lots of steam, that will help loosen everything up. Also if you have an asperator you could suck some of the snot from his nose to help him breath. For his cough try some vicks vapor rub on his chest, back and throat. Make sure he gets lots of liquids and feed him when he's hungry....I'm sure he'll feel better in a couple days.

Steam up your bathroom and sit in there with him. If you have vicks vapor bath then put some of that in the water. Double check your steps to make sure its a cold and not allergies.
If your son has a runny nose it is possible he has an ear infection. Most come when the nasals are blocked or even just put pressure on. I would offer him some tylenol or motrin, which ever is preferred. If you can get him seen on Saturday it is probably best to try. Some offices have weekend hours, if not theirs their back-ups might.

I myself have children. Always under any circumstance remain calm. Since this is the first time your child has been this sick, his/her immune system hasnt really kicked in so it may take longer than normal to get over the illness. IF viral the doctor will more than likely give some instructions but will just tell you it has to be fought off on its own. Just try to keep the baby as comfortable as possible. I believe that is its main problem. Also keep their nose clean babies are obligatory nose breathers. Hope this helps.

He may be giving up his nap at this age anyway. And I'm really sorry to have to say that. Its best at bedtime to have little rituals to ease him in, after his dinner give him a warm bath, and no television so he isn't stimulated, a quiet chat or even just a bedtime story in a dim room. A kiss for him and his favorite stuffed animal and then a cheerful goodnight. Then don't go back in. This works wonders for sleep problems at any age, although you might have trouble finding a teddy bear at 50.

If you are giving him cold and flu medicine they may be making him hypo,if he hasnt got a temperature give him a warm bath before bed,and put a tablespoon of vicks in a bowl of boiling water in his room to vaporise it. Camomile tea helps them sleep too. Good luck.
