What I would suggest is to go to a shop where they sell paint and look at the colors they offer. They usually have strips with the colors that would go together. Whatever you chose to go on the walls, I would suggest a bit darker for trim and a bit lighter for ceiling if you intend on do that.
Adding touches of color in your accessories - such as your bed spread, curtains, even your furniture can also brighten your room up. Don't have heavy dark curtains, maybe just some sheers if you have windows in the room. But just getting lighter colors in your bed spreads and ruffle can help add brightness to a room.

You don't have to paint the room in a light color to lighten up. the color just needs to be neutral, that and the ceiling needs to be painted a lighter color, but in the same color family, than the walls. But I would go with a pale yellow, its a light and bright color and will go with a lot of things. But it really does depend on what the decor of the room is.

Go with a very soft buttery yellow. It is cheerful and also soothing. Just be very careful when choosing a yellow and try samples on the wall first. Yellow, more than any other color, intensifies when it's all over. You can use blue accessories in the spring and summer and red, orange, green and brown in the fall and winter. Yellow is very versatile! Good luck.

Why not very light pink walls and darker (maroon or cranberry) trim? Get some mirrors to reflect light? Lacy sheer curtain panels? Invest in some brighter wattage light bulbs and/or more lamps???

I've beem watching a lot of HGTV decorating shows lately and several of them have used a lime green to lighten and brighten. Then again there is always yellow.

Why not something funky, if you are game, like checker board red & light blue, or checkerboard yellow & orange, whatever two colors you'd like. Or paint light blue with some clouds. Or some kind of mural.
