Woah cant believe people who said boring to Izmir hmm wierd i guess they dont know how to have fun.
Well its nothin new , since you got kids keep them in sight like you usually do within any country. Everything is similar nothing to worry bout. Its a foreign place so keep em close, but you guys will be cool..
But i wish you were there with in June , Sept , rather then Oct. Those are the times when Izmir really rocks.

Izmir is a large industrial/commercial city, and while the area by the seafront and the main street are reasonably pleasant it's not the most exciting destination, especially for the kiddies. Much better off heading for the coast (the nearest major resorts are Cesme and Kusadasi) - October is still fairly warm and the sea is nice, and there aren't millions of tourists. Also don't forget to check out Efes (Ephesus) in Selcuk, ca. 40 miles south of Izmir - it is the most amazing place, an entire antiquity city largely intact! If you don't mind the drive / bus ride, go and see Pamukkale, about 150 miles inland, it's an incredible natural mineral springs system which has formed deposits that give it its name, 'Cotton Castle'; the kids will love it!

Izmir is a large, cosmopolitan, westernised city which has all the facilities that you would expect/need.
Children are universally admired and people will respect you and them. Typically in a cafe or restaurant the waiters will act as unofficial child minders/entertainers.
The traffic is terrible. The noise (day and night) is appalling.
Pavements are often covered by parked cars and kerbs are extremely high which can make push-chairs difficult to manoeuvre.
Izmir is not a popular destination for tourists, there is very little that would appeal. If you are coming on holiday, why not try neighbouring Foca or Cesme instead? If you have reason to be in Izmir itself I hope you have a good time, maybe I'll bump into you!

Fidget & Aaltonen have said it all really. I'd add that you need to be as vigilant there with your small kids as you would be in any city anywhere in the world. The Turkish people are great with kids, so don't be alarmed or offended if they squeeze the kids' cheeks!!
