me and my associate were thinking about opening a coffee shop across from the local college, and were wondering if our ideas would be appealing to late high school, and college kids. To start off, it would be called "Caution Coffee" and the slogan would be "This Sh!t is hot. You've been warned." It would be a internet cafe, but the computers would also employ popular gaming titles such as WoW. The coffee selection would be range from standard dark to espresso, to coffee energy drinks, to hangover remedies. instead of "Starbucks selection" or whatever, the "music" would be comedians like mitch hedberg, and sorts, plus live local comedians whenever possible. We figured the walls could be decorated by marker or paint, by the people who came in. Featuring a 18+ profanity wall, and different other themed walls. We thought of offering a "mighty joe" challenge, were a someone would attempt to drink 15-20 double espresso's and sit through an episode of Martha Stewart, without moving. Gd, bd?

It sounds great except for the profanity wall. I think that would ruin the whole concept. After all, both children and older people would be customers and would take issue with that. Have a celebrity wall or if you have games such as darts or pool, a winners wall. Or drawing competition. Good luck.

Local acts coming in sounds really good, the coffee selection sounds great,,but the profanity wall isnt cool, sounds like a good idea but I dont think it would go over that well, its like a signal to thuds in a way to trash the place ,it could be trouble. Can some one get hurt by drinking that much coffee 15-20 double espresso's? Law suit..What about food? The slogan does fit either ,didnt someone suit McDonalds for having too hot coffee?I would do more research...rethink some of the ideas.

Definitely sounds interesting and I'm sure the location will be good since college students always need coffee. I like the idea of the challenge - although I know I would never win it. I can't stand Martha Stewart on a good day, let alone after 15-20 double espressos.

Coffee shops don't make a lot of money. How many "associates" are involved in this? Who would be working in the store? Are you and your associates willing to put in the long hours required to run the store for the hours you feel it would need to be open to attract the customers? Do you think you would be able to attract enough business to cover your overheads .. rent, utilities, employee payroll, etc. I am sorry to be a pessimist but I am going to tell you that you have no idea what you are getting yourself in to. You need capital (money) to start almost any business. Normally landlords expect at least a year lease. The commercial equipment is not cheap. You will need furniture, fixtures, etc. to do all of this ..go work at Starbucks or somewhere else to get an idea what actually goes on in this sort of business .. pay attention to the crap and issues going on with employees, customers, managers, equipment, suppliers, vendors, etc. ...learn as much as you can about the business ... and then if you still feel like you want to do it and have the capital, then go for it ..otherwise in my opinion if you just do this without a plan you are going to fail miserably!

Good idea...I owned a coffeehouse at a university in Ohio.

The mighty joe challenge and the hot sh?t idea sound like lawsuits just waiting to happen, though. Don't do those.

Almost every university has a coffeehouse across the street though, and you should try try try to get DIRECTLY ON THE CAMPUS...this involves subcontracting through whichever foodservice co. has the food contract there....

Warning...they will take a % of whatever you make, then will dump you to do it themselves after your contract ends. Don't invest too much money into it. You have to have that captive audience. People will not give up their parking place on campus to drive across the street to buy their coffee. They will buy whatever is in their path between classes. trust me...I lived the dream (or nightmare).
