Download GSpot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ , and check exactly what type of file you are playing. GSpot tells you the exact info on what codec is used. Then remove the codecs that the file needs and reinstall the codecs.

Check to make sure the file type is not unassociated.. right click the file, open with... and select a player... then try again until it plays. If this doesn't work, you may have a bad codec.. try uninstalling them and getting a fresh codec pack such as Klite Codec pack
