Apparently doing a deep clean of a messy room today, i located a bunch of papers that were damp and seem to have been so for awhile, i threw them out but then noticed a stench i the area by where they had been (which was on a the plastic that lets the desk chair roll easier across the floor). Under the plastic is carpet, i think i spilled a small amount of water there awhile back and the papers soaked it up, i had thought they would dry right out but perhaps they didn't. The room may have stayed to cool or the air just never got down to them.
Now that they are gone what could be causeing the smell and what should i do? I sleep in this room.... but now i am worried, i hadn't noticed the smell before i pulled everything out of the room, as there was much blocking that area.

Ok, i tried cleaning the plastic mat with 409 and it "looks" clean. However the smell did not go away, i also tried using "air therapy" spray which usually get rid of any smell. However it too was ineffective. I also lit some candles alot of them in the room last night hoping that might help but it too did work.
If i remove the mat and the smell remains what solution should i try on the carpet area and how do i do it?
Also the carpet and mat both seem to be dry and there should be no new source of water, should i try to dry the area with a hair dryer on high as well? Would that help? Thanks

Don't go into that room until you get a proffesional to disinfect it. This is the cause of major health problems.

Sounds like mildew to me. The plastic probably created a nice little greenhouse environment with the paper and the moisture. I'd definitely remove the plastic mat for awhile and let the carpet dry thoroughly. I don't have carpet so I don't really know, but I think there must be some carpet sprays or powders for this sort of problem.Even baking soda (then vacuum). And of course, Febreeze is a great product. Really removes funky odors. I don't think you have anything to worry about other than a temporary unpleasant smell, now that you've removed the offending objects.

The first thing to do is to search for a source of the moisture. Is there a plumbing or drainage leak, a leaky roof? You must get rid of the water. Next, you have to increase the circulation to the area. You will then be able to clean up the area. The cheapest way may be to replace the carpeting in the area, but before I put new carpeting in I would wash the area with a 10% Clorox solution. Very few species of mold are toxic, and mold is everywhere so don't worry unless it is proven to be one of the bad types.

It could be mold, or just the carpet / underlayment rotting...

Try some Febreeze or even pouring some rubbing alcohol on the area and letting sit a few minutes before soaking up with a towel.

yucko - get lots of fresh air and sunshine into ur room
sprinkle a tonne of bicarb soda onto the affected area of carpet and leave to absorb the smell and dampness for several days then vaccum up
good luck, use a hairdryer or heater to dry it faster if u dont get no sunshine into ur room
