I'm all for it, I'll finally be able to go out for a few beers and not go home stinking of smoke.
And it's not going to affect smokers that much, all they will have to do is go outside for the couple of minutes it will take them to smoke their ciggies.
EDIT
As for those that argue for the retention of separate smoking areas
IT DOESN'T WORK
Smokers continually
1) Enter the non-smoking areas while smoking, then make stupid excuses like "I'm only walking through to go to the toilet"
2) Smoke at the bar, while trying to hide their ciggie from the staff
3) Ignore the no smoking signs completely and smoke wherever they want.
EDIT 2
YES
Smokers have a right to smoke
But I also have a right to breath clean air when I'm having a drink or eating.
And the bar staff have the right to work in a clean environment.
All this "they can get a job somewhere else" and "non-smokers can just stay at home" crap is typical of the mentality of the majority of smokers.
AND BEFORE SOMEONE SAYS I'M A NON-SMOKER COMPLETELY AGAINST SMOKING.
I'M NOT, I ENJOY THE OCCASIONAL CIGAR - AND HAVE NO PROBLEM AT ALL GOING OUTSIDE TO SMOKE IT IF OTHERS WANT TO BREATH FRESH AIR
EDIT 3
Recklessme is typical of many smokers.
Won't smoke in their own house because of the smell, yet will happily stink out other peoples houses, and smoke in the presence of others in public.
If you are happy to smoke outside at home then why not do the same everywhere?

Well, I live in Edinburgh..I smoke..at home I smoke outside anyway, now I have to count on getting invited to friend's houses to smoke indoors!! Now with winter coming up I feel the pubs/resteraunts will suffer..but I do believe its a good thing. I know France are starting it next year, New York/Ireland already enforce the law..
It is a pain..if I were in my late teens/early twenties I guess I would be more bothered re the social situations of it..whereas I really don't mind now..apart from when I am out eating..& as every smoker knows theres nothing like a ciggie after a meal!!!
So I am for it I guess!

Personally I'm very much against the ban; it will destroy the culture and ambience of a traditional pub. Just take a look at Dublin; the smokers are all standing outside, and so are half of the non-smokers, and the atmosphere inside is dead. There are plenty of trendy wine bars, and no-smoking pubs for those who don't want to be bothered by cigarette smoke; leave what is obviously a winning formula alone.

I truly ought to accept as true with you. i'm a smoker and that i develop into making plans on a holiday in the united kingdom. that's undesirable adequate that I truly ought to sit down down on a airplane for 10 hours without smoking yet to get off the airplane and performance the smoking ban shoved in my face again is outrageous. i'd properly be bringing a number of thousands of funds into the united kingdom yet i'm now wondering that Amsterdam should be my vacation position. i understand they received't quit me from smoking (yea i'm speaking cigarettes). If the united kingdom would not favor my funds that's in simple terms high quality with me. You deserve the well-loved individual I gave you.

it's a pain in the ****. We've got it in Scotland just now and it puts you off going out to pubs etc. It was ok in the summer to stand outside but it's getting colder and wet and it's annoying. That's why the ban isn't starting till May so that most people will be sitting out in the sun enjoying a smoke and a drink. Wait till the winter though. They should have a smoke room for anyone that wants a smoke

Its great, and about time too, if people wanna kill themselves smoking they can go on ahead but not at the expense of non-smokers, why shouldn't we be able to safely go in pubs/clubs without having to breathe in other peoples damn smoke. It stinks and it causes a whole host of illnesses, if people wanna smoke they can stay at home or puff away outside, tough if the weather isn't particularily nice, thats their probelm, cigarettes should have been banned along time ago but there is too much money involved and people are still prepared to die to have a cigarette, they don't care about their life, they are suicidal, weaklings, if they cared that much about their health they would stop, its called WILL POWER, its very selfish for smokers to expect non-smokers to put up with this filth. Finally I will be able to come home from a club knowing I don't smell like an ash tray and that I haven't consumed smoke I don't want to breathe in. Its not political correctness gone mad, just common sense!

It really annoys me. I accept not smoking on buses ect, because I'm only travelling for about 15-20 mins but in pubs I'm there for hours and regardless of how bad it is for me my cravings are worse! If other people don't want to breathe in smoke, let them stay at home. They wouldn't do that anymore than I wouldn't smoke when I'm out enjoying a drink. Put the shoe on the other foot.

The pubs will suffer would be a good idea for non smokers to have there own pubs.If we all give up smoking this country would go up in smoke ( lack of taxes ) would luv to see how the non smokers would re-act to there pay packets being attacked. They say we smokers are a burden on the NHS the tax on fags more than covers us infact it probably goes towards paying for non
smokers

Can't wait! Every time I go into a pub I have to get my clothes dry cleaned afterwards, very expensive. If you put them back in the wardrobe all your clothes smell like a doss house.
Also smokey places give you a sore throat, especially if you're dancing and taking in big gulps of stinky-smoke.
Oh dear, smokers' rights ? What about breathers' rights, then ? What about our freedom to dance, eat and breathe ?
Bring it on.
