Not all religions or cultures wear black to funerals. Most of our society believes that wearing black is respectful because it is not a color that typically promotes joy or laughter. You wear black because you are NOT happy that a loved one or friend has passed. It also represents the emptiness that you have now. In my religion, black is a color that symbolizes the end. The end of the day, the end of life, etc.

black was the color of death and mourning. In the late midieval period, in the wealthy houses, it became fashionable to wear mourning colors, such as black and dark greys. The Victorians took this to extreemes with their love of the gothic and macabre. This is not a universal practice, however, as all cultures have their own mourning practices.

It's not hard to see how black is related to darkness (lack of light) and how darkness is considered a bad thing. Darkness deprives us of one of our most important senses. The symbolism seems fairly clear to me. It would not surprise me to find this association in most cultures. I'm not sure it's a belief so much as a very basic symbol and its associated fashions.
Of course, there are exceptions. If your business is in the black, that's good. Black ink on your ledger is good, as opposed to the bad red ink.

i don't know why. but my favorite color is black. so much so that i dyed my hair black. my feeling is that it hides everything. pain saddness and even happiness. when i dyed my hair black people started asking me if i was goth. i was offended that people stereotype like that. but maybe people wear black to funerals to hide the pain and suffering of losing a loved one. i wear it to hide the pain and suffering of my life.
