Their nocturnal activities are keeping me awake. They engage in sex every night (completely normal I know) but it's very , very loud! How do I explain to them that it's becoming a bit of a nuisance?
If it was loud music I could handle that but telling a couple that their sexual antics are annoyingly loud with decibels is awkward!

not much point in notifying the authorities. They usually start by confiscating the noise-making device - possibly painful for somebody :-)

If the property is rented, it may be the landlord's responsibility to install soundproofing.

Alternatively, tape record it and then play it back very loudly on the stereo shortly after they've finished.

At the end of the day however, it's the most difficult noise disturbance to eliminate as people do have a right to have sex and some people are noisier than others.

The other possible alternative is fro you to start at the same time. Then the noise won't bother you as you'll be making just as much:-)

If you are in any way close to them, do your best to apologize for what you want to say, but that you might not be the only one in the neighborhood that is having a hard time sleeping. Or you could always make some noise of your own one night, then leave a pair of earplugs or those noise canceling headphones on their door step with a note saying that they are welcome to borrow them, and that you know they work wonders for nocturnal activities...

To spare everyone the embarrassing face to face confrontation, try writing them a letter and slipping it under their door. Be polite and explain to them that you have to be up early in the morning. You won't have to specifically tell them what it is that's keeping you awake, just mention the noise at night and they should get the point.

If it continues to be a problem you'll either need to contact your landlord (using discretion in the conversation) or purchase an alarm that has a white noise function and hope it drowns them out.

We have a neighbour living above us who snores very, very loud at night! At first it was annoying because we didnt know what to do, but a friend recommended foam ear plugs and we gave it a go. It worked!! No more sound from the guy upstairs!

You can buy a good set of foam ear plugs from Superdrug or any good Chemists.

Put them in before you go to sleep and I swear, you will not hear a thing next door!!

Sleep tight!

Sue the housebuilder and ask for your money back for them making such a crappy party wall.

In fact, raise it through the courts and you'll have the Mun & the Sirror round straight away looking for the story.................. I'm sure the national publicity will make the neighbours think again!. (Or maybe the street will become a knocking shop ?!)

`try approaching them nicely, this may seem embarassing, but they will probably be more embarassed, if they are un-reasonable and it carries on, you can get in touch with the enviroment department at your local council; explain what has been happening, they get calls all the time like this so dont worry, they will send you a log book to fill in for three weeks, make sure you fill the times and dates when you are disturbed, send it back, your neighbours will then recieve a letter explaining if they dont control the noise they will be taken to court, this normally does the trick, if not further action will be taken, hope you get it sorted, theres one next door but one to me, and my next door neighbour is doing the same, because her kids can hear it! take care love jackie .

Leave a short, anonymous note on their door that their "evening activites" can be heard by all, and they may want to tone it down.

Some people like to be heard, however, so if they continue, talk to the landlord. Making noise at night isn't acceptable, whether it's music, sex or a vacuum cleaner.

+ This might work, Invite a bunch of friends over and applaud their activities at appropriate intervals. If you can't do that, get one of those laugh tapes and play it really loud when they finish. that should give them the idea that you hear their activities, or encourage them(Huum that might not be so good). I think the laughter would be disturbing so give it a try.

Good luck

By next door do you mean they live in a house next to your house? Or do you live in the same building and they are in an adjacent apartment? The next time they're having loud sex mock their exact noises. If they do something like "oh, oh, yes, baby!" then yell "OH, OH, YES, BABY!!" really loud out the window (if they live in the next house) or against the wall (if they live in the same building). They will hear you and realize they're being too loud.
