I'm not sure, I've had some similar issues that were, I know irrational, like someone being in my room when its merely a coat on my doorknob or something like that... I don't think it necessarily means theres something wrong with you.
But if it is a problem that you believe disrupts your life, you *can* go seek medical help, however, I wouldn't put it to them as Paranoia, they're likely to associate it with a mental illness like schizophrenia, which I would hope you would look at as pretty much last resort of diagnoses. It sounds more likely to me that you just have some form of anxiety or nervousness... so I'd focus on those aspects when presenting your case to any doctor.
I aren't qualified to make any sort of diagnosis, and you sound quite rational to me in your question, though it can be hard to tell by text alone. A common symptom of schizophrenia is irrational paranoia, most often sufferers cannot tell they are deluded, but you seem to know what's happening to you and it's just that it doesn't seem to have a cause that bothers you...
Hope this helped...

I would see a counselor...seriously...it is amazing how long we can carry around old baggage and not even know it. Maybe when you were a child your back was turned and something scary happened...it's a natural instinct then for you to feel that because you haven't worked through it. The weird thing is sometimes we don't even know we are carrying the "crap" around. We think we are moving forward in life and then something happens and then suddenly the "crap"you thought you left behind is in your face.
Deal with the "crap" and get rid of it.
You won't believe how much better you'll feel.
Good luck babe :)

i don't know if we are alone but i have the same problem. my problem is also with people following me up the stairs, or down a hall or across a room, this problem is my worst fear. i know it frustrates those around me, because i must always go last. it is so bad that i will lash out at anyone who would delibertaly do this knowing my phobia. not funny and my house isn't haunted either

What happened when you were little? Did someone jump out and scare you? If not, you're watching too many scary movies or your house is haunted. Mine was. Do you feel them moving your hair or do you suddenly get cold or smell something strong? It could be haunted. Don't be closed minded......

It sounds like this issue is really getting its claws into you. When something affects your life so deeply then you should take steps to reclaim your life from this unseen but still very real force.
You ought go to the doctor & explain this to them & ask what can be done. They should offer you some sort of medication as well as some cognitive behavioural therapy or refer you to someone who can show you techniques to overcome this fear.
Don't be too hard on yourself - it happens to a lot of people.

To a degree,..paranoia is a good thing because it keeps you on your guard...but when it is paralyzing as yours sounds like it could be...you really need to try to find the reason for your fear..it might be a little OCD brewing also
