To sum it up I believe that is what makes him 'God'!
I'm not religious but spiritual!

Tell him to look it up. That way you don't just feed him information which he will accept without thought. Start teaching your child critical thinking at an early age.

The truth! Some really smart con men, back before civilization existed, discovered that with lies they could control the masses.

[This is not the firs time I notice, but here stands out like a sore thumb the overall lack of critical thinking of theists.I'm not sayin they're wrong, just that most of them repeat "he always was" and "he doesn't need explanation" (and n variations) without showing any signs that they even tried to think. They, altogether are a sign that they didn't even tried to think!
My point is, why they need a cause for everything, but NOT for a god. Why no to say (even if just as a tought experiment) "the universe is infinite in time" and "the universe and its laws dont need a cause". Isn't it exactly the same, if not simpler?]

Everything in the universe was created by God for a reason. Therefore everything that He created has a beginning...a starting point. God created all things, including time. This means that God exists outside of time. Since He created time, time then also has a beginning and ending. God has always existed and because of this He exists outside the boundaries we know of as time. God is eternal and He is not constrained by time, which has a beginning and end.

We use time to show a beginning and an ending for everything that was created in the universe. However, God also created time...since He created everything. Since He created time, He exists outside of time. He is eternal...or outside of our concept of time...having no beginning nor an end.

I hope this helps a little. The answer is in how we perceive time. And if you believe God created all things, then you must believe He created time. He existed before time was created, so He has no beginning.

I told my children that no one created God. But, that is the only real concept that has to be taken on faith. Everything else can be proven by common sense as well as scripture. (The human mind has trouble with the concept of a being with no beginning,, which is what makes it a difficult task to do properly)

As for answering your son's question, it depends on his age and understanding as to how you can explain it. But, then again, if you do not believe in God, how do you teach your children the truth about God, if you say there is no God?

You have to teach your children what you believe, or they will think you are blowing smoke out of your ears, and whistling through your nose! (smile)

Those who believe in God are able to explain the concept of God to their children quite well. Those who don't are the ones who are stumped.

Depending upon the age of your son, I would firstly encourage these kinds of questions. They show that your son is really using his intellect and if you support him in all of his little (actually this is quite a big question huh?) questions he will grow to be a truly great thinker.
Now, on how to answer him. Tell him the truth. God is God. By the very definition of Him being God, if you believe He exists, He has always existed. This is one of many reasons that He is completely divine and we are not.
The funny thing is that this isn't something that you really learn to understand better when you are an adult. Its probably just as mysterious to a child, perhaps more so, than it is to an adult. You will probably not be able to grasp the concept of "eternal existence" any better than your child and this is kind of a cool thing.

You'll have to pick and choose based on his age and what he will understand.

We are limited to discussing God in human concepts, such as eternal, infinite, etc. For us time is linear, one second follows the last and so on. We alwasy go forward on a neverending time line. Physics has shown that time is a property, and only exists when matter exists. God exists outside of matter (and was the creator of matter) and so He also exists outside of time. God has no beginning or end, he simply is. Because we only have our human experiences to compare to, it becomes difficult to comprehend how a being could be eternal. Once we become wholly spritual being ouselves, we will finally be able to experience and understand what it means to exists in a place outside of the worldy constraints of time.

Personally I would be honest and say that answer is not for us to know. The bible is an account of mankind's begining and history, not God's. Even at that, we only have a small glimpse of how the universe was created, again not our buisness.

But there is hope that one day God will reveal all answers to us.
We can only hope.

God is an eternal being. An eternal being needs no creator. Only something that has a beginning needs a creator. God had no beginning nor does he have an end. The universe needs a cause because the universe had a beginning. That's what the big bang is all about. It's the start of the 4 dimensions....3 dimensions of space and one dimension of time.....yes, that's right......time had a beginning. But God had no beginning so He need no creator.

According to the Bible. He has always existed. You'd think he'd have an origin, but If he Say's he is eternal he is eternal. According to the book of Job, he doesn't have to tell us why he does/says the things he does. He cannot be a cause, according to what someone else said. Because there would have to be something before it to be caused. You can't chain that infinitely, because the beginning would never start ,and we would never be here.
