It lets you release all the emotions that have been building inside of you. Crying is a good thing to do when needed - it's healthy. Bottling things up can lead to some very serious problems such as depression.

It depends, there are 2 schools of thought. Some say it is chathartic and therefore it releases emotions. Some others say it might trigger an uncontrollable reaction to just keep on trying.
I reckon both to be true, depoending on circumstances.

Crying often helps to relieve stress and suppressed anger. So, yes, it can be very helpful but it shouldn't be used in lieu of confronting and/or changing a bad situation.

I believe it is the release of tension. I get a sense of relief that I have finally acknowledged to myself that I am sad (upset, mad, etc.) because I usually try to keep my feelings hidden.
