lol.. apple's answer was just too cute "girlfriend/boyfriend thingy is not allowed in Islam!!"

The western concept of dating isn't really practiced by Muslims. So we're not allowed to have boyfriends/girlfriends. Although I think guys and girls should be allowed to be in a friendship before they get married. How can you marry someone you don't personally know? Can you have a decent conversation with him/her? Are you on the same wavelength? To me all these things are important for a marriage to work out.

There will be boundaries in this friendship of course. And before any Muslims start condemning me, I said 'friendship'! Not a romantic relationship... because we all know what that could lead to.

What the Arabs do is they get engaged first and use that time to get to know each other... and some do the nikah (marriage ceremony) as the engagement so that their time spent getting to know each other isn't regarded as haram (forbidden) in the eyes of God. Then the wedding is just a huge celebration to confirm that they have officially accepted each other as husband and wife.
