I eat icecream as a comfort food. Something about the creamy texture, and cold sensation I think. However, in general people turn to certain foods when they are stressed or distressed. Ice cream just happens to be relatively common, mostly because it's advertised in many movies and such.

Remember how as a kid you probably received ice cream as a happy food? When you fell down, when you scored well in an exam, etc. I reckon it subconsciously brings back happy memories.

I got a Best Answer for you.
The science behind comfort foods is that they are high in one of the following amino acids, which are synthesized by the body into neurotransmitters which make us feel better.
L-tryptophan - synthesized into serotonin, which improves sleep and mood and makes you more calm. Foods rich in it are turkey, milk, shredded wheat, pumpkin seeds, cottage cheese, almonds and soybeans.
L-phenylalanine - synthesized into norepinephrine and dopamine. Norepinephrine increases energy and feelings of pleasure while dopamine reduces anger. Foods rich in this amino acid are peanuts, lima beans, sesame seeds, chicken, yogurt, milk and soybeans.
L-glutamine - synthesized into GABA which decreases tension and irritability. Foods rich in it are eggs, peaches, grape juice, avocado, sunflowers, granola and peas.
Conclusion: Milk is high in two of the listed amino acids, therefore ice cream is a popular comfort food.
