what others have stated is true to some extent. Still it is always safe to use DVD - R compared to DVD + R, since most of the players play the (-) R CD / DVD

Just ask them what their dvd player says it's compatible with. usually if a dvd player DVD+R works the same for DVD-R, all those mean is that they're NON-REBURNABLE disks. the DVD+RW or DVD-RW means that they're RE-BURNABLE disks. Usually the + or - just counts on what kind of DVD recorder you have and not what kind of DVD player your using. As long as they have a recent DVD that can play burned CD's or DVD's then it can play any + or - R or RW version. I hope this helped you :)

The issue is the capability of your friends computer/DVD Player.
One Format came out before the other! Some players will only read one or the other. Then there are some players that will read them both.

You need to get it from your friend, the capability of his/her player.
