Vasaline can be used for diffusions shots (on seran wrap, not on your lens or even directly on a filter).
Just a wild guess here, but you're probably into art photography with a Nikon F4... and loath to post process in Photoshop. Photoshop filters would be your best bet, however. I haven't tried this with my camera, but I have one idea that might work. Get a cheap filter or something that you can place over your camera lens. Then, try smearing it with something like Vaseline, in a thin layer, but not thick. That should cause some distortion, and it might help you get the effect you are looking for.
