There's a cat that comes to visit us often, and all the other residents in my complex. It has a collar, but no one knows where it lives. It doesn't seem to be at home much, if it has a home. The last few weeks it has had dry blood on its nose and it sneezes a lot. I don't want to take it to the pound, in case it gets put down, and I don't know if I should take it to the vet, because its not our cat. What should I do?

if it were me, I would take him to the vet and have him looked at. several years ago i had the same situation. i had this full grown black cat at my house everyday, he looked reasonably healthy, but because i had other indoor cats in my home, i decided that i should take him in for an exam, shots and felv/fiv test. he checked out healthy and negative. My point is, after a couple of months of him roaming in my neighborhood, it was obvious that either no one cared or he just had no home, so before winter i took him for a bath and brought him in, he lived happily with us for about 10 years and was probably one of the nicest cats i have had.

Call the vet and tell them the situation. Tell them that it isn't your cat, but you fear that if you take it to the pound they will put it to sleep. And that you don't want to the cat to be sick or in pain. The vet should look the cat over and see what he can do. And if there is nothing wrong with the cat, then he can tell you a good place to take the cat, where they will take care of it and find him a good home. The cat deserves to live a happy healthy life with a family that loves him. You seem like a good person for wanting to make sure he is ok.. Good for you :)

Dear fellow cat person,
Here are a few ideas on what to do with your cat.

Also look for a group called nanimalrescues on yahoo groups. I hear that they help people with stray animals by putting them in touch with the right people in their area .If you can and have the resources available why not just take the cat in for now? I'm sure with it being fall and getting cooler at night, it would sincerely appreciate a sheltered place and some food. As far as the blood on it's nose. You can take a Q-tip dipped in warm water and GENTLY dab the blood away.
Hope this helps you and your feline friend

It's probably a stray or owned by a very careless owner. Unless you are willing to take this cat in and pay for it's care, then there is little else you can do except turn him over to the pound. You could go there and have him scanned for an ID implant. He may have good owners but just wandered far from home.

Cats don't legally belong to anyone. I would take it to the vet. It might have a bad cold or have been in a fight.

Take a photo and put some notices up asking the owner to contact you.

you can take it to the vet and they can organise to either re home it or they might have had someone looking for him!!
its up to you weather you pay for it to get better, but i would take it to the vet personally.

I wouldn't bother it. It could be very sick and/or have rabies.
