What is a fast and cheap way to get rid of canker sores? Orajel helps with the pain, but not with getting rid of them. I have two of them...one on each side of my mouth and it is really hard to drink or eat

Actually, until having gastric bypass surgery back in 2003 I was a diabetic, and even though I'm not now, I eat VERY little sugar.

Oh my goodness, I can not believe that someone said a canker sore was a form of herpes. Canker sores and cold sores are completely different things. I usually get canker sores when eating a lot of acidic foods in a short while. At our dental office we give out samples of Zilactin, which is sold OTC. It stings at first, but makes the sores go away faster, which alleviates the annoyance.

Drink filtered tap water only, all bottled water that I have tested has been acidic. You can get a Ph tester at Wal-Mart for 8 dollars in the pool supply section and test your own water for yourself. Continuous food and dehydration and stress are your biggest enemies, and water and exercise and proper diet are your best defense, and never hold food in your mouth or sip on liquid food. Anything with flavor ( even diet stuff) will create a film on the skin and not allow your saliva to do it's job which overstresses the immune system with an overproduction of bacteria. Some bacteria only take 20 minutes to have babies so diet is more important than hygiene, luckily we can starve them to death in 2 to 3 hours so we can be back to normal by our next meal. If we allow enough time so nature can take care of itself you will love the results. With the bypass it will be tougher for you because of the need to eat more often, try to make it three hours between meals with nothing with flavor in between, two hours at the very least. If you break this rule you will have more problems than a canker sore. Brush with baking soda and peroxide slurry or the weakest non-foamy toothpaste you can find and rinse with a water device then floss, the # of balanced meals you eat a day will determine how often you do this regime, 3 meals needs 2x a day, 6 meals - 4x a day and so on, especially before you go to bed. If you eat a balanced meal, this will keep your blood sugar level for the 2 to 3 hours you need for the bacteria to die naturally. If you try to cheat on the diet part and fight this problem with extra hygiene all you will do is drive the bacteria deeper into your body and cause bigger more isolated problems. Because you can't sterilize your head and if you eat they eat and if you feed them they will live. They just wont live out in the open were it is easy to see them and this is the last thing bacteria need is an advantage. Which makes them harder to find and harder to get rid of, I hope this info helps. You can also zap canker sores with lazers but you asked for cheap and other than prevention, salt water or baking soda water, which ever works better for you, is the cheapest the but lazer is the fastest.

SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS BUT I FEEL LIKE SCREAMING THIS .........do not, i repeat DO NOT rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide when you have canker sores.
someone gave me this advice one time when i was desperate because of recurring canker sores........they said to use the peroxide................BIG MISTAKE
it makes the sores swell.............it goes into that open sore and does what it does....which is bubble or boil out the sore and this leaves BIG THROBBING PROTRUDING canker sores that are so way worse than the regular old miserable open mouth sores
ow man just thinking about them
i used to get them bad..........2, 3, 4, 5 or more at a time
good luck

Canker sores are not caused by a herpes virus. Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. Usually it's not the same herpes virus as with genital herpes, but it can be. It can be spread from mouth to genitals and vice versa. People who get cold sores are usually only contagious when they have a sore, but people with genital herpes are at risk of spreading the virus even when they don't have an outbreak.

Colgate Peroxyl mouth rinse worked well for me
DGL tablets dissolved in the mouth help heal ulcers
Take a good multiple vitamin-mineral pill daily and a b50 complex daily til the sores are gone. Take the b50 again at the 1st sign of a sore starting up again.

Get a q-tip and soak it in peroxide, then touch the q-tip to your sore and push it down, hold it there for a long while, turning it occassionally. it's gonna burn like the devil! Do this daily, even 2-3 times daily, i guarantee it will go away very soon!
