Interesting question.

I am Polish and Yugoslavian. I am a Christian What am I?

I would think that Judaism is a religion and Jewish is a race of people... but I wonder??? The people of Israel were known as Jews almost from the beginning of their inheritance.

Jewish by blood through one's mother is only partially jewish, or perhaps better said, it is not representative of jews but holds the potential to be.
When someone is jewish through his mother (or having undergone a kosher conversion) AND practices judaism, then that person represents the jewish people and can properly be called jewish. (I suppose one might say that such a person is a "completed jew".)

It can be considered one of the two or both. It depends on the person. I know a guy who sees it as his race (he calls himself Jewish-Ukrainian) and other people who just see it as a religion.

if you think of judaism as a nation, you will have a lot less trouble. you can be born american, or you can gain citizenship. in the same way, you can be born a jew, or you can "gain citizenship" by converting.

the jewish people consider themselves the nation of israel.
