Earmites

Ferrets are very sensitive for this plague. Earmites are small critters who nest themselves in the ferrets ears. Fighting them is necessary, a ferret is bothered by them and the mites could damage the ferrets eardrum, and cause an middle ear inflammation. An inflammation can slumber there for a long time without causing problems, treatment however is always necessary. Earmites can recognized because the ferret has dirty ears with a brown smearing in them. Earmites are very contagious, so you must treat all ferrets that are present in the house, and need to clean the cage extra well. At the Vet you can get a couple of products against earmites, and a Vet can tell you for certain they have earmites, he can see them under the microscope. Other animals can also obtain earmites, therefore there are a number of different products available. These products will vary in strength, a ferrets ear is very vulnerable, even more so than those of other animals like a dog or a cat. It is possible that those products could irritate the ear to much and therefore damage it. A safe product you could use is Otiderm ointment, an other safe product is the earmite suspention of Dr. H. Moorman. The last one is a liquid form. Always keep checking you ferret for earmites on a regular basis, almost no ferret can escape them. Sooner or later they will all get it, and here the rule also is, the quicker you find out, the faster you can start the treatment.

Middle ear inflammation
a middle ear inflammation will make a ferret very ill. He has fever and walks around with an oblique head. The treatment contains rinsing the ears, this will happen under narcosis and has to be done by a reliable Vet.

They are the most contagious of all contagious things. But not life-threatening. You need to bring the cat to the vet, they will get the mites out.
