yes you must be online to be able to instant message. If you are not online there is no way to receive the message "instantaneously." They can send you mail to your myspace inbox if you are off line or they can leave a comment on your page that you can access whenever you log on.

Yes it only works when you're online........and you have to get it from your friends list........not your own.....if you know what I mean. This is for myspace IM'g that is...........
You can get email, but not in IM...it's not like yahoo messenger.........which is the best as far as I'm concerned.
