Immediately after death of Muhammad there was a fight for succession to the seat of Islamic power. Obviously, it was the husband of Fatima who should have succeeded, since Muhammad had no surviving son and Fatima died within few days after death of her father. Ali, the husband of Fatima was killed in a coup de etat. His two young sons and a six months old infant, the grand son of Ali was also butchered on the lape of the grand father; by the supporters of the father of the youngest widow wife Aisha. Aisha's father Abu Ba-qr supported by Omar the Khalif's of Mecca mercilessly killed all the supporters of Ali called Ali-Shia. Such killing continues through out the world till this date.

Though the Sunnies killed by annihilating all the children, grand children of Muhammad, still they claim to have protected the Islamic interest. Loyalty to Prophet is more by the Shias but their number is dwindling as compared to the Sunnies. Iraq, Iran, Pakistan are predominantly Sunni where as Turkey and India are having substantial number of Shias.

Between the Sunnies and the Shias, who are loyal to the Prophet?

I heard it said that only the WAHHABI are to be trusted!
I do not trust the Sunni OR the Shia!

More than once I've tried writing an easy to read, and comprehend answer, but I think the best way to learn about what happened is by reading about it in Christine Huda Dodge's book called ' The Everything Understanding Islam Book'

It is easy to read and easy to understand try it, and God bless you.

I don't think I'd care to wade through a site full of anecdotes. Is there anything on that site that answers the specific question?
