My mother got a Temple "Divorce", what she had to do was very painful for her, she had to write down her sins (repented or not) and send it to the First Presidency, Then she had to wait for a personal letter from the Prophet declaring either the seal has been disolved or their was nothing warrenting a cancel of the Sealing. Generally the only way the Prophet will do this is one of two things, one the relationship was abusive either to a spouse and/or child, or adultery. These are the only ways that the Prophet will approve a Cancelation of a Temple Sealing. I hope that this helps your niece.

The union can be unsealed if it is determined by the Mormon authorities that the union was invalid, unconsummated or otherwise not complete for some reason.

Your niece should ALSO know that there are other ways than Mormon ways and she owes it to herself to learn of the world before she commits herself to any one, small piece of it.

Yes. Either can apply to a temple divorce. This should be done when the wife is ready to remarry. Even though the couple is split, the individuals still have the personal blessings.

Talk to the bishop about it, if he can't help, I don't know who can, I do know that it has been done before.
