At leaset 30 minutes a day. You have to get your heart rate up and sweat. At the beginning you may feel it's hard, but after couple weeks, it will be easy.
Try to walk as fast as you can and get the intensity that you can hardly talk. Sweat, sweat and sweat.

its not really how long you walk it is how fast you can walk that far, you could just walk 10 minutes but make it a good paced 10 minutes and it equals a slow paced 30 minutes. just depends on how much you can handle at a time.

If you have not exercise in a while I would start by walking for 10 mintues until you feel your body is ready for more. trying reading healthy women 2006 by prevention

I would aim for 30 minutes, and eventually work up to an hour. It depends on how fast you walk, so I'm not sure what your mileage would be.
