I just lost my min. dachshound and am thinking about getting a larger dog this time. Any ideas on a large version so to speak of a doxie? I was looking at a Wiemaraner, Vislas, or Blue Tick Coonhounds, maybe even a Pointer of some sort like a German Shorthaired. I have a very large yard but it will have to stay in the house at night when I go to the lake. So the dog will spend alot of time with me on the road. Thanks for all your help!!! ; )

Good for you! i know how hard it is to lose a dog. i just lost my Vizsla. honestly, if you're thinking about getting one and have looked, GO FOR IT! they are the nicest dogs, and great companions. i strongly recommend the breed. i also have a lakehouse and they love to swim. they love big yards too. Goodluck with your choice, and i hope you pick the viszla!! they are the best dogs!

There is no larger version of a doxie. They have a personality all their own! I would recommend a dog from the hound group, as those will be closest to your expecations. Sporting dogs like pointers or weimies have much much much more energy and are more likely to drive you crazy. If you can handle the noise, a coonhound might do you alright. I would definately recommend meeting several different breeds of large hounds before you make your final decision. You are doing the right thing by asking questions and researching before jumping into your next dog. Once you know exactly what you are looking for, you could also possibly consider a rescue group or shelter to see if they have a match for you. All reputable breeders will invite you to meet their parental dogs and relations before getting you to commit to a puppy - you should have ample opportunities to really get to know your new breed before you select an individual dog or puppy.

Good luck!

Maybe a Labrador Retriever. I have my first one and I would not ever have another breed. Their favorite thing is to be with you and if the dog needs to be on the road with you a lot the Lab is perfect. Not to mention they are extremely loving and friendly. They are higly intelligent and easy to train. Thats why so many are used in service work, for their intelligence, versatility, friendliness, their strong desire to be with their master, and their ablities to adapt. You mentioned a lake, Labs lOVE water, so if he needs to around it the dog would be in heaven.

Maybe a laborbordor retriever? When they grow up ( and of course when there small ) there are VERY bouncy/ adorable. Or maybe a german shepard they are big and bouncy/ adorable! Thats what i would do atleast. Well good luck with your new dog and i hope you have a great time with it. I hope my advice helps.

My sympathy to you for you loss...

Boxers are lovable dogs and easy to house train. I have one that is 4 years old. She is very calm, great around people and kids. But when I want to run and play she'll run and play, she not all over you-licking and jumping-I love her and this breed...

Go to a shelter and find the biggest dog there. That doggie will be grateful for a home.

Mutts Rule! There usually healthier and you will be saving a life. There cheaper I get discounts from my vet and some dog trainers offer discounts for mutts. My dog Chuck agrees with me.

There are many dogs that need good homes. When you visit your local shelter, you're sure to fall in love with one. I suggest www.petfinder.com. Good luck!
